Could someone clarify what the hardline position is on mp3s as far as
downloading from the likes of Limewire and broadcasting.

What is common practice? That is the practical position thats not dotting the
i's and crossing the t's.

We are only a small non comercial station based @ Kamo Intermediate.

Any responses valued.

Hi Graham,

It's just about impossible to keep up with the various laws regarding downloading of MP3s. My opinion is that as long as you are paying APRA and PPNZ for the right to broadcast music, then you should be pretty much Ok.

In general I'd say that downloading MP3s is illegal. You aren't paying the artist for the use of the material - but then most people don't use their MP3s to rebroadcast.

I'd be inclined to make a call to APRA or PPNZ and ask what their official standpoint is. Ok, you aren't paying to download the music but you are paying (I hope!) at the other end to broadcast it, so at least the artist is getting paid.

Tip for the day - make sure your MP3s are at least 160 kb/s [anything higher is better of course]. Anything less sounds awful on-air. The processing artifacts are quite noticeable once they've been stereo multiplexed.

You can go here for free legal music downloads: http://music.download.com/

It is mainly unsigned bands and artist, so don't expect the latest Missy Elliot or anything like that, but there are some good tunes, you can listen to samples before committing to a full downloads which is good for seperating the chaff from the wheat.
