Does anyone know what software comes with the DIY package from The Mulcher Fm?

No, no idea.

The guys at Mulcher a very helpful, they helped me out with legal and technical information when I started up mofo fm. Well worth picking their brains if you are thinking of setting up.

Okay, so were looking into setting up a student radio station at our school.

If we get the DIY package from the mulcher, what else do we need?

Mulcher website wrote:
Our DIY package includes:

  • RSM compliant FM transmitter engineered to broadcast at the legal maximum of 500mW in New Zealand. Easily adjusted up to 1W when the revised low power FM General User Licence comes into effect
  • 10m low-loss RG213 antenna cable
  • Sturdy dipole antenna system
  • Front of TransmitterPower supply unit
  • Cable to connect audio player to transmitter
  • Forms to fill in for music licenses
  • Comprehensive installation instructions

The cost for this package is NZ $2405.25 including GST

(from: http://www.themulcher.co.nz/package-DIY.html)

You may want to enquire about compression, as there is no mention of a built in compressor in the transmitter they make, and you will want a compressor in your set up to avoid interferance with other stations (splatter). It looks like a nice transmitter though.

As for studio gear, computers (software), mixers, mics, CDs Turntables etc... I'd be surprised if it was bundled as there are so many options there, and usally comes down to personal choice.

As for your original question re: software, the above list does not mention it, I'd suggest http://abj.spacejunk.co.nz/ (free), but I'm biased because I wrote it. There are many good Radio Automation Softwares out there, just got to find the one that works best for your needs/budget.

I'm very skeptical when using The Mulcher.
The reason being, I emailed them to find out about Apra etc and stated I had all the broadcasting equipment as well as studio equipment and did not need advice on the the set up just as far as royalties to go.
They said if I wanted their help I was to pay the $700 odd plus GST which is the same as if I was going to use them for the whole project.
I stated once again that we were all set up and ready to flick the switch( I am a broadcast tech by trade and have not dealt with the legal side before)
That all the equipment was in place and ready to broadcast. We just needed to know what to do about submitting to Apra etc.
Their response was.. call us when you are more serious  about setting up a radio station.
My advice is to stay clear from these pricks.
We have decided to start up a business on the side in NZ that helps people get LPFM stations off the ground with out the huge fees that Mulcher charges.
..And we are more friendly.

I think thangs may have changed at Mulcher since I asked them for help, because they were very helpful, and did not charge for it.

Anyway, there are links to the legal type side of things here: http://www.low-power-fm-radio.spacejunk.co.nz/forum/forum_po sts.asp?TID=7&PN=1

The PPNZ site seems to be broken, so I'm not sure about them. APRAs site is a confused, hard to find anything type site.

There is a bit about it here (last 2 posts): http://www.low-power-fm-radio.spacejunk.co.nz/forum/forum_po sts.asp?TID=9&PN=1

I emailed them recently, to ask if they knew where any of the bits and pieces I am currently hunting down might be.

Working on the basis that they probably have some good contacts in the industry throughout NZ.

No reply to my email, not even a "Sorry, can't help".

Looking over their site, I get the impression they are only in it to make money. That's not the spirit of radio in this country guys - take that attitude and you'll end up like the big corporates - not very well liked.

Somehow I get the feeling they're already in that boat.
